Abstract

Objective : To define the characteristics and outcomes of ureteroscopy (URS) for upper urinary tract stone disease among elderly patients.

Materials and Methods : We reviewed 336 patients who underwent URS, and compared the characteristics and outcomes between those aged ≥75 and <75 years. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anticoagulation therapy, and obesity (BMI ≥30) were defined as operative risk factors.

Results : The mean age of the patients was 59.5 years, the mean hospital stay was 7.8 days, and the stone-free rate (SFR) was 75.3%. The complication rate was 15.8%. Although complication rates and SFR did not significantly differ between the two groups, the older group required longer hospital stays and had more risk factors.

Conclusion : Although URS is effective for treating upper urinary tract stone disease in elderly patients, aging increases operative risks and prolongs hospital stays.
