Abstract
In order to develop a rational strengthening method for upgrading of the impact resistant capacity for RC beams, proposing a near surface mounted (NSM) technique of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rods, falling-weight impact tests for the RC beams strengthened applying NSM-FRP rods method and/or FRP sheet bonding method were carried out. Here, Aramid FRP rod/sheet as new materials were used. The results obtained from these experiments were as follows: (1) applying the NSM-AFRP rods method, impact resistant capacity of the RC beams can be upgraded; (2) the proposed NSM-AFRP rods method may be more rational technique than AFRP sheet boding method for upgrading impact resistant capacity of the RC beams; and (3) the RC beams strengthened with NSM-AFRP rods may reach the ultimate state with rods debonded due to peeling action of the tip of diagonal shear crack.
