Abstract
Earth hummocks are distributed sporadically on the rather ill-drained waste lands in Tokachi Plain, eastern Hokkaido where are frost susceptive volcanic soil developed in cold climate.

Recently the earth hummocks have been gradually transformed into inactive forms except a few places, according to decrease of intensive frost heave by reduction of soil moisture and groundcover have been replaced from low-growing grasses to thicket of bamboo grass and tall weeds mixed with shrubs. The causes of these environmental changes in ground freeze are seems to be lowering of underground water level by public works and also rise in temperature during recent several decades.
