On the illustration of Enpo edition The Tale of Utsuho in Edo Period

Abstract

The sentences called "Etoki" are found in The Tale of Utsuho written in the Heian Period. It is considered that The Tale of Utsuho has close relations to illustrations, because "Etoki" is related to illustrations. The book including illustrations in the whole volume was published in the Edo Period (1667). The influence of "Etoki" on these illustrations was studied. About 1/4 of all the illustrations was related to "Etoki". This result shows that the writer on this book drew illustrations taking "Etoki" into consideration.
