Abstract

This study focuses on a method of support provided by having "conversation partners for people with aphasia", a pioneering method of communication support for people with aphasia. Problems in promoting the institutionalization of the method were identified by examining results of previous studies done in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan. After surveying the background to the issue of why transitions of support and social participation have not progressed, the study organized the problems that became clear from previous experiences with communication partners in the four countries. And furthermore, problems that occurred from institutionalization were extracted. At least four problems in formulating "conversation partners for people with aphasia" as an institution were found: (1) empowerment of people with aphasia, (2) supervisory functions for conversation partners, (3) establishment of a guideline for the training curriculum of conversation partners, and (4) development of evaluation methods. The programming of empowerment of people with aphasia and supervisory functions is especially important.
