Description

The present study examined reach length during reach motion without transfer of the center of gravity (COG), the relationship between height and maximal reach length (FRmax), and postural optimization during functional reach in the forward direction using a geometric model (FR model). The model determined the optimal angles of the ankle and shoulder joints that are required to maximize reach length at a fixed COG position and hip joint angle. The simulation showed that a postural change could elicit reach of about 25 cm during functional reach without moving the COG forward. The FRmax value was increased in proportion to height, and an increase in foot length proportional to the height and COG movement was important for the increase. The relationship between the joint angles of each FRmax with a fixed COG did not depend on height.
