Abstract

Females of sulfur butterfly, Colias erate poliographus, show a wing color dimorphism. Mate preference of wild males to female morphs was examined using tethered females in viewpoint of female copulation experience. Among virgin females, males significantly preferred to visit the yellow morphs rather than the white ones, but showed similarly persistent courtship behavior against both morphs once they had visited. Among experienced females, no biased visiting was found. However, the courtship behavior of males persisted with the white morphs more than with the yellow ones. In the additional choice experiments using wing models, males preferred to visit yellow models whether the wing was open or closed.
