Description

Chlorination of temporary wastewater treatments in earthquake damaged wastewater treatment plants were evaluated by inactivation of indicator microorganisms and toxicity. CT values for 2log inactivation of Total coliforms by chlorination in the treated water by temporary wastewater treatment, which are influent/overflows from primary clarifier, contact oxidation process in the order of restoration period, were higher than in the biological treatment. In case of the chlorine demand remaining combined chlorine residuals, the influent/overflows from primary clarifier was maximum 23 times and the contact oxidation process was maximum 4 times higher than the biological process. Therefore, efficiency of chlorination in the influent/overflows was improved increasingly by the contact oxidation treatment. Meanwhile, in results of Microtox®, toxicity was detected in the treated water by temporary wastewater treatment. However, no inhibition effect in the biological process. In the case of after chlorination, toxicity was detected in all of the treated water with chlorine residuals, but after dechlorination adding Na2S2O3, the toxicity was decreased to similar level in the each treated water before chlorination. If aquatic organisms in discharge area need to protect, the toxicity could be removed sufficiently by dechlorination.
