Abstract

Along with the rise in the density of atmospheric greenhouse gases, immediate attention is needed to be given to global warming as a world-wide problem. The depletion of fossil fuels is also a serious issue. In this context, the promotion of energy conservation and the utilization of renewable energy are both important issues. Furthermore, the movement away from atomic energy has been gathering momentum in Japan due to the shutdown of nuclear power plants resulting flom the accident that occurred at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant at the time of the Tohoku earthquake disaster of 2011. The author conducted a survey regarding the environment and energy this year on the inhabitants of the 165 residential developments built in Kikuyo Town, Kumamoto Pref. in 2011. The greatest characteristic of this residential area is that approximately 60% of residents have installed household PV systems. Furthermore, many residences are using high-efficiency devices as cooking and hot-water supply equipment. This paper report on energy usage and CO2 emissions as well as examines the efficacy of household PV systems and the use of high efficiency heat source equipment.
