Abstract

In this research, I focused on the Ability of Promoting Discussion (APD) as a principal element for effective discussion in small groups. Through research of previous studies and analysis of teacher speech, the importance of the following strategies became clear: (1) fostering common understanding, (2) controlling progress, (3) organizing opinions, and (4) increasing cooperation. Moreover, through an analysis of lessons that aim at the acquisition of APD, it became clear that the strategy to increase cooperation built a foundation for discussion, and posing questions to all the participants and helping students to organize their opinions are the most important factors for promoting discussion.
