Abstract

<p>This paper analyzes initial objectives and latest status of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in which global Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) firms have acquired plants from Japanese firms in the early 2000’s. The results indicate that firms are unable to expand business in the case of acquisition of organizations with manufacturing knowledge for advanced products. However, it can be confirmed that a firm expands business in the case of acquisition of an organization with design and manufacturing knowledge for commodity products through knowledge transformation of the acquired organization which is evolved to become applicable knowledge for designs and production engineering of various products through the interaction among overseas plants of the firm and customers.</p>
