Abstract

To clarify the heat stress reduction and ultraviolet shading effect by awnings, measurements of thermal parameters and ultraviolet intensities with or without awnings were conducted at a kindergarten in Ageo, Saitama prefecture in August 2017. Based on the measured data, the universal thermal climate index (UTCI), the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), and UV Index were calculated. Following results were obtained. The awning lowered UTCI and WBGT by 4.9 ℃ and 3.3 ℃ respectively in clear weather with solar radiation of 1,000 W/m2. This heat stress reduction corresponds to lowering the risk category of heat disorder by one level. Meanwhile, the awning provided a space not requiring protection against ultraviolet rays.
