The annual production rates of pollen, male flowers and cones of an Abies firma natural forest in the lower part of the warm-temperate deciduous broadleaf forest zone, northern Kyoto, were studied. The pollen production rates were determined on a landarea basis by multiplying the number of male flowers that opened in the study forest by the mean pollen yields (in terms of number and dry weight) of male flowers before flowering. The former was measured using litter traps, and the latter has been reported previously. Pollen production rates were estimated to be 0.672-6.14×10^<12> (mean, 3.02×10^<12>) grains/ha, and 98.8-1,051 (mean, 457) kg/ha. Annual fluctuation of pollen production rates during four consecutive years, represented as the ratio of the maximum rate relative to the minimum, was about 10. Compared with the values for several Pinus densiflora stands, the rates, in terms of grain number, were similar while in terms of dry weight, they were larger, furthermore, the annual fluctuations of these two rates showed larger than that of P. densiflora. The dry-matter production rates of male components were 137-1,434 kg/ha, and pollen allocations reached 68-73%. The investment of photosynthates in reproduction or the mean dry-matter production rate for male plus female components was 228-2,930 kg/ha, among which pollen allocation reached 29-43%. The numerical ratios of pollen grains to ovules (P/Ov ratio) for the three study years, two of which showed good production and one bad, were 280-350×10^3.
