Description

Transformation of the psychic structure of contemporary young people is pointed out in psychotherapy in Japan today. This study focused on the concept and the sense of self, and investigated how the characteristics of contemporary young people, such as relationships with others, based on divided self-images, ‘inability to worry about’ are reflected in the structure of their dreams. As a result, the sense of self influences both the behavior of dream I, as well as the continuity of place, time and viewpoint of dream I, which makes the development of events in the dream possible. In addition, dream I has difficulty remaining in a conflict situation, which reflects ‘the inability to worry about’. However, in the ‘recent’ dreams, the conflicts of dream I begin to continue, as compared with the ‘childhood’ dreams. It is suggested that the development of sense of agency in dream I, or sense of others, affects this change.
