Abstract

Microcystis aeruginosa was cultured for 7 or 12 days in media that were supplemented with the autoclaved water extracts from the leaves of 104 woody species belonging to 80 genera within 42 families. The inhibitory effect of the extracts on the growth of the blue-green algae was assessed on each sample using an estimation of the growth inhibition ratio (GIR), and an analyzing the effect of polyphenol content of the extracts on the GIR. The polyphenol content was expressed as catechin equivalent (CE), determined using the Folin-Denis method. We identified 14 highly inhibitory species (with GIR values over 80%), 12 of which were newly discovered during this study. In general, extracts with higher polyphenol contents (mg CE L-1) tended to show higher GIR- and lower EC50 values. Neither the taxonomic group nor habitats showed a relationship to the GIR values or polyphenol contents. The results of this study indicated that the leaf extracts with high polyphenol contents were highly effective at inhibiting the growth of the blue-green algae, regardless of the taxonomic group or habitats of the plants.
