Abstract

This short paper considers the pictures that tell the story of the Battle of Shimabara. The explanatory texts contained within the pictorial diagrams are introduced in this paper. These notations indicate a unique literariness that is different than those found in such things as scroll paintings and byobue (pictures on Japanese folding screens). Although someone has not written them directly in the pictorial diagrams, the story can be understood through the explanatory text. And this is subject matter that has not been pointed out up until now.
