Abstract

Women who receive infertility treatments try to remain positive about the prospect of further infertility treatments by maintaining the hope of becoming pregnant, thus avoiding depression and self-control. On the other hand, some women experience a shift in their life plans and future outlook through the very process of devoting themselves to infertility treatments. In this study I interviewed a woman who had received in-vitro fertilization multiple times; this woman has, over time, reflected upon her experiences with infertility. I used the qualitative research method, Trajectory Equifinality Modeling (TEM), to analyze these interviews. TEM is a useful qualitative method for depicting different trajectories of human development and life courses over time, as well as differing cultural and social contexts. I focus on key turning points and visualize the process through which she selected an infertility treatment that suited her values, extended her place of work and gave significance to her experience of infertility. Her experience is also suggestive of ways to structure periods of receiving infertility treatments. I present here a model of Generativity in an adult woman.
