Abstract

It does not seem to be universally acknowledged that Toshihiko Izutsu, one of the most prominent Japanese scholars, recognized for his invaluable contributions to Islamic studies, has at the same time made a remarkable contribution to the elucidation of philosophy in Mahāyāna Buddhism. To the best of my knowledge, substantial evaluation (except for two reviews: Shinʼichi Nakazawa, Mirai no shikō e no karashidane, Shinchō, 1993; Hiroo Kashiwagi, “Ishiki no Keijijōgaku wo megutte,” Nihon bukkyōgakkai hō, 59, 1994)has not been made to date either in societies of religious studies or in those of Buddhist studies since the time his book, Metaphysics of Consciousness,(written in Japanese)appeared in 1993 as his posthumous legacy(Tōyō Tetsugaku oboegaki, Sono 1, Ishiki no Keijijōgaku, Daijō kishin ron no tetsugaku, Chūōkōronsha). The compactness in volume, being compiled in as few as sixty-nine pages in the tenth volume of his complete collection, coupled with the simplicity in style lacking footnotes, a bibliography, and other critical apparatus, may make this work appear to be somewhat brief as compared to the breadth and depth of the issues therein
