Abstract

Prenatal testing has created ethical and social controversies. When NIPT began in 2013, genetic counseling by clinical genetic specialists and certified genetic counselors was recommended to ensure patient autonomy. However, few empirical studies show that genetic counseling actually resolves problems induced by NIPT. This article focuses on pressing issues on-site that emerged from interviews with genetic counselors and perinatal clinical psychotherapists. Results show that counseling has become a goal in itself, that there are differences in opinion among relatives, and that information and support obtained from obstetricians before genetic counseling are inadequate. The dilemma between ethics in prenatal testing and patient autonomy needs to be examined within the context of various problems existing prior to the counseling.
