Abstract

<p>Five papers constitute this special edition entitled “Experience of Reproduction: Health Care and Medical Care/Treatment.” In a narrow sense, reproduction means the production of a new generation to replace the population. Sociologically, it is the cultural practice of child-bearing and -raising. Moreover, it is a whole life process that includes menses, intercourse, partnership, contraception, sterilization, infertility treatments, pregnancy, abortion, prenatal testing, childbirth, nursing, and menopause. Although societies attempt to control and manage reproduction with, for example, marriage systems and population policies, medical treatments and interventions often play a greater role in the control and management of reproduction. This special edition not only clarifies the present situation of reproduction with empirical analysis but also highlights the importance of medicine in reproduction and discusses the relationship between reproduction and society.</p>
