Abstract

In urban areas, people spend much money to maintain public parks, street trees, and their garden trees, and so on. We focused on these urban environments from the view point of "ecosystem service". Ecosystem service is a concept that represents the relationship between human and nature as various services. Using this concept, we investigated the human consciousness in urban environments. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the value of urban ecosystem services. We performed a questionnaire survey in the administrative district of central Tokyo. The answers (n=510) collected in the survey were subjected to conjoint analysis. The results showed that among the elements of the urban ecosystem services surveyed, the green space and air or water purifying function were highly valued. On the contrary, the residents did not value services such as tourism. From the answers of the residents indicated that can incorporate the resident's opinion on policy decisions of urban environmental management. These results suggested that the management of the urban nature should be done based on values for residents. We propose the method of asking residents' opinions on urban nature incorporating the concept of ecosystem services as a useful tool in urban policy and decision-making.
