Abstract

Candidates for credentials to work as caregivers in Japan are required to pass a state examination, which requires a high level of ability in the Japanese language, and represents a significant hurdle for candidates who have come to Japan due to opportunities provided by Economic Partnership Agreements. This study examines how such candidates prepare for the examination, revealing those points that they can deal with easily, versus the points which volunteers, language instructors and colleagues who assist them with their studies should pay attention to in order to effectively support the candidates' preparation. In this study seven candidates were interviewed. The data from the interviews was analyzed with the Modified Grounded Theory Approach, based on the Structure-Construction Qualitative Research Method. Analysis of the data shows how the candidates' process changed from stagnation to active involvement. It is important for those who support the candidates in their study to help them maintain their motivation and to give them an overall view of the state examination, because the examination period is so long. Furthermore, study supporters can prevent candidates from becoming isolated. The results suggest that fostering the ability to form human relationships between candidates and their nursing home colleagues is important.
