抄録

This paper examines what part a rural community played in the modern and contemporary period. This case study is done in Kurimisho Village, Kanzaki County, Shiga Prefecture, mainly a rural community, Otomehama. First, how the local community managed every villager in the modern and contemporary period is analyzed. As a result, the community sometimes played an important role in thrift and saving among the villagers. The upper and middle class villagers except the poor were active in selling and buying goods, but the poor villagers were helped in loan. The community contracted to make up the tax list and collect taxes including other communities. On the other hand, it sometimes did not pay taxes in time to meet the deadline as the resistance against the management of the administrative village. Next, the relationships between the local community and the administrative village are analyzed in the modern and contemporary period. The administrative village, Kurimisho Village became independent of Kurimi Village and overcame inequality and separation. It rotated the chief of the village to achieve equality, but its scale was so small that it faced a financial crisis and was not regarded as a model village. In the end, it was forced to merge into another village.
