Abstract

The two experiments were performed to clarify the design requirements of camera monitor systems (CMS). The participants were required to simultaneously carry out a tracking task and a rearward monitoring task in both experiments. The dependent variables were: the reaction time and the percentage correct reaction to the rearward stimulus, and the tracking error. In Experiment 1, the effects of the display size (3.5-inch, 5-inch, 7-inch) and the display location (around the center of driver, around the steering, around the side mirror) were investigated. The results showed more than 5-inch display put at the location with smaller visual angle is preferred. In Experiment 2, the effectiveness of the warning presentation was verified to improve the accuracy of correct reaction for the 4.3-inch displays built into the inside rear-view mirror. The reaction time and the percentage correct of the display with vibrotactile warning were significantly improved as compared with those without warning.
