Abstract

In this study, we discuss the educational relevance of copy-like action in early childhood and the research trend of its associated area. As the etymology of a Japanese word meaning “learning” (“Manabi”) is said to be “imitating” (“Manebi”), imitating other people’s behavior is the first step of learning. Since young children learn something by imitating the behavior of surrounding children and adults especially in early childhood, we focus on the imitation learning of young children to discuss the above issues. When young children do “copying”, they create ingenious works on the basis of the model imitation due to manifestations of immatureness and originality of their drawing ability. We therefore define “copying” as “copy-like action” in this study. Based on the previous studies, we determine the development of young children’s drawing ability, and then we further discuss the relationship between the copy-like action and “visual realism” which was mentioned by G. H. Luquet (1927) as a feature of young children’s drawing. Finally, we study the significance of young children’s copy-like action during the transition period of the development of children’s drawing from “intellectual realism” to “visual realism”.
