Abstract

A 76-year-old man with tarry stools and anemia underwent upper GI endoscopy and was found to have a polypoid lesion in the anterior wall of the upper gastric body. A biopsy showed poorly-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Abdominal CT showed wall thickening in the upper gastric body and lymph node enlargement at the lesser curvature. A laparoscopic total gastrectomy and splenectomy for gastric cancer were performed.
Macroscopic examination of the resected specimen showed a 14 × 11 cm polypoid lesion in the anterior wall of the upper gastric body. Histopathology showed mostly undifferentiated tumor cells, including many rhabdoid cells with uneven distribution of nuclear chromatin staining and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for cytokeratin and vimentin. These findings confirmed a diagnosis of undifferentiated gastric cancer with rhabdoid features.
The patient is currently receiving oral anti-cancer therapy and has had no recurrence for 13 months since surgery. This case of undifferentiated gastric cancer with rhabdoid features is reported along with a discussion of the relevant literature.
