Abstract

As conflict continues to be a pressing issue, social workers need to promote professional competence for conflict resolution and facilitating group decision making. This is especially true when working on task groups that are designed to enable professionals from different disciplines or with different roles to coordinate their work toward a common purpose to improve the quality of client service delivery. However, in Japan there is a strong conformity around group members, even if they disagree or develop a feeling of dissatisfaction, in order to avoid apparent conflict. For the above reason, this article investigates the transformation of students’ cognitive framework against conforming behaviors among a task group and explores the possibility to develop their perceptional images of conflict through transformative learning in an educational lab. As a result, their cognitive framework for conflict has been transformed from the avoidance tendency to more collaborative problem-solving manner.
