Abstract

From an analysis of handwritten manuscripts by Yumeji Takehisa, we identified the characteristics of his handwriting, and based on the findings, we examined the methodology of the development of Kana typeface.
First, we selected “Berlin Diary” as the material in which it was possible that a reprint existed, and we examined the Hiragana syllabary.
After confirming that the material is characteristic as well as ensuring legibility, and on the condition that the proportion is good and fits into a square, a framework was extracted after narrowing down to 2−4 characters for each character. Moreover, with regard to the extracted framework, we added arrangements, adjusted each portion, and attempted a prototype of the Hiragana typeface.
