Abstract

We examined directional extreme wind speeds estimated by a high-resolution and long-term meteorological data, CRIEPI-RCM-Era2, which was produced by a dynamical downscaling with a numerical weather forecasting and analysis system, NuWFAS. After checking the behavior of Gumbel plots for annual maximum wind speeds, we discussed spatial distributions of the extreme wind speeds, especially paying attention to effects of orographically-enhanced local severe winds with approaching and passing typhoons. The data with the spatial resolutions of 5km, corresponding to horizontal grid spacing of NuWFAS, has a capability to grasp the local wind reinforcement due to topological effects with Gumbel plots, which are similar to those in mixed wind climates, while that with the spatial resolutions of 15km weaken or extinguish strong wind areas in lee-sides of mountainous.
