Keiji Nishitani, a famous disciple of the philosopher Kitaro Nishida, analyzed the relationship between evil and egoism in the context of Kant and Schelling’s views and Zen-Buddhist thought. Nishitani criticized the hypocrisy that occurs within the ethical field. Any individual who judges himself to be a perfectly good person is thereby masking egoism in high-order. We are obliged to ask what ethical position religion takes in this regard, and here Nishitani discussed a shift from morality to religion in Kant’s philosophy. From the standpoint of Buddhist emptiness (sunyata), Nishitani examined the relation between persons who overcome their egoism. For Schelling, that relation could be grasped from the viewpoint of indifference and love.
