Abstract

Following a previous paper (Honma, et al.,2010), stranding, entangling, and sighting records of marine mammals along the beach and offshore regions of Niigata Prefecture, the Sea of Japan , were compiled from January 2009 to May 2010, in order to made comparison among the instances of previous years investigated 1994-2008. As a result,5 stranding, 2 Minke whale entangling, and 154 sighting instances, consisting of 141 on the Niigata ~ Ryotsu route, 5 on the Naoetsu~Ogi route, and 8 in the offshore coast of Kashiwazaki by whale watching boats, were noted. The striking numbers (141) indicated the largest than for of previous years, and were reported elsewhere (Honma and Iwashita 2010 ). A small number of stranding records seems to be dependent on a few rough storms occurred in winter. Many individuals of Dall’s porpoises were observed on the car ferry operating on the Naoetsu~Ogi route. A stranding beaked whale was inspected macroscopically from the pathological point of view.
