Description

This study validated the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) L2 soil moisture product (ver. 3.0) using in situ hydrological observational data for seven years (2012–2018) in the Mongolian Plateau study area. Although AMSR2 slightly underestimated soil moisture content at the depth of 3 cm, satisfactory timing was observed in both the response patterns and the in situ soil moisture data. Accordingly, small mean values (0.041 m3/m3) of RMSE was obtained regarding the relationship between AMSR2 soil moisture from descending orbits and in situ measured soil moisture at 3cm depth. Comparison of the soil moisture products of Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) with the AMSR2 L2 soil moisture product showed that AMSR2 could observe surface soil moisture with greater accuracy and stability. AMSR2 also suggested no remarkable yearly change of the measurement accuracy during the seven years. The results clearly demonstrate the high performance capability of AMSR2.
