Abstract

A study was conducted at Komerebi-no-mori, a 73ha greenbelt in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, for the purpose of comparing and claifying both the changes to the forest and the understanding of these changes by the people who use it. The survey that was focused on the forest showed that the vegetation cover in the managed area was higher in both the herbaceous and sub tree layers and lower in bush layers when compared to unmanaged areas. Interviews with surveyed residents revealed that before Wold War II the Sagamihara plateau copse was felled, weeded and fallen leaves were raked. After World War II reclamation only weeding was done in the remaining areas and after rapid economic growth no management was carried out at all. From around 2000l lumbering and road maintenance was carried out. According to survey results, some residents used the forest daily but few had noticed changes in the vegetation and few had considered taking steps to maintain the forest Overtime the relationship between the forest and users has changed and this in turn has changed the forest. Because Komorebi-no-mori is used frequently and mostly by residents, this study believes that they should understand and interact more to the forest, as well as engage in a part of its management, thus contributing to retain its rich nature.
