Description

It is thought that one supernova (SN) takes place in one galaxy per 〜50-100 years. However, there is no convincing historical record of SNe in our Galaxy in these 〜400 years. In this period, the telescope and the spectrograph were invented, and many extragalactic SNe have been observed. We have started a project to find the "light echo" from the two historical Galactic SNe, Tycho's SN (recorded in 1572) and Cassiopeia A (recorded possibly in 1680). By performing spectroscopy of the echo with Subaru telescope, we uncover the mystery of these famous SNe.
