Description

Coastal nursery areas play an important role in the recruitment processes of a variety of fishes. This paper reviews coastal processes related to larval transport to the nurseries and larval survival during the planktonic drift period. The great emphasis is placed upon the interaction between physical and biological processes affecting the larval recruitment. The following subjects are mainly discussed in the context of the progress made during the last decade; (1) wind-induced transport and vertical mixing, (2) coastal fronts such as tidal fronts and slicks associated with internal wave, (3) behavioral responses of fish larvae to water circulation, and (4) offshore water intrusion. The utility of Lagrangian tracking of a larval cohort and numerical modeling of larval transport and survival processes are also reviewed.
