Description

[Purpose] To evaluate more aspects of communication attitudes of orthoptic students at the medical interview in an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), we studied the possibility of introducing the viewpoints of an applied behavior analysis (ABA) into the current use of evaluation sheet.

[Materials and Methods] Materials were 10 videos of orthoptic students' performances at the medical interview station, and the respective 10 evaluation sheets by teachers and simulated patients on communication attitude. The evaluation sheet included 5 items: "appropriate language" , "empathetic attitude" and "maintaining eye contact" scored by the teacher, and "able to express anxiety" and "an overall interview evaluation" scored by the simulated patient. Based on ABA, three types of the student's behaviors during the interview were selected from the video for evaluation: communication, note-taking, and silence. As the ABA assessment items, frequency and the average duration for each behavior were calculated. The results of the video analysis were recorded on a newly designed behavior check sheet. Spearman correlation coefficient was used to analyze the relations between the frequency and the average duration of each behavior and each five communication attitudes.

[Results] No significant coefficients were found between the two ABA evaluation items and five communication attitudes variables. This result indicates the ABA perspective and evaluation items for communication attitudes were independent.

[Conclusion] The findings clarified the effect of introducing ABA perspective into our currently used teacher's evaluation sheet for medical interview. And, the newly designated behavior check sheet would be useful for students to explain their attitudes in medical interview on the feedback meeting of the OSCE.
