Description

In Japan, from fiscal 2018, insurance for sex reassignment surgery for gender identity disorder was approved. Also, the disease name was changed from gender identity disorder to gender dysphoria (DSM-5), gender incongruence (ICD-11). The word LGBT is widely used in the world, and schools and companies are also promoting inclusivity for sexual minorities. Furthermore, societies grow understanding of sexual minorities in the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, in Japan, at present, knowledge about gender identity disorders and gender diversity is not widely spread among medical personnel. In Japan, there are few medical facilities to treat gender disorders, and patients with gender disorders are still visiting distant gender clinics. In this article, we review matters concerning gender identity disorders and gender diversity by putting together the latest knowledge at the present time.
