Abstract

Background: Resection of tumors of the pancreas is often associated with impaired quality of life (QOL) due to poor prognosis and extensive surgery. Although malaise commonly affects the QOL of many patients, it is often considered an untreatable symptom.

Objective: To identify factors associated with, and interventions to reduce, fatigue experienced by patients 3 months after pancreatectomy.

Methods: Correlations between fatigue and hepatobiliary-pancreatic cancer-specific symptoms and physiological markers in 77 patients who underwent pancreatectomy were statistically investigated.

Results: Fatigue experienced by patients 3 months after surgery was associated with subjective symptoms, such as dyspepsia, change in appearance, fever, weakness and nausea (r=0.236, P=0.039), reduced body weight and muscle strength (r=-0.361, P=0.014), rapid nutritional deterioration (r=0.290, P=0.010), and depression (r=0.489, P=0.000).

Conclusion: Management of subjective symptoms, early postoperative rehabilitation, preoperatively initiated nutritional management, and mental health care may be effective to reduce fatigue experienced 3 months after surgery.
