Abstract

<p>In this paper, I examine Yokomitsu Riichi's experiences in Budapest and how they influenced his long novel Ryoshū. I begin with Yokomitsu's short story “Keshi no Naka” (Among the Poppies), which is based on the writer's own experiences in Budapest. Kaji, the Japanese protagonist of this story, meets a man who is deeply involved in Turanism, and I analyze the process through which Kaji becomes aware of the close relationship between Japan and Hungary. Next, I compare ”Keshi no Naka” and Ryoshū, focusing on a motif the two works have in common; namely, the relationship between the body and sound. Finally, I conclude that, as a way of resolving the problems he raised in Ryoshū, such as confrontation and harmony between East and West, Yokomitsu looked back on his experiences in Budapest, and published “Keshi no Naka”. In this way, I reveal how deeply Yokomitsu's Hungarian experience is connected to his thinking late in his life.</p>
