Abstract

Random copolymers with liquid crystalline (LC) and alkyl side chain were synthesized by living radical polymerization. The LC phase structure of the copolymers was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement, polarization microscope (POM) observation and X-ray scattering (XRS) measurement. In DSC measurement, we observed higher phase transition enthalpy from the isotropic phase and liquid crystalline phase compared to the homopolymers despite random copolymers. This result suggests that the ordered structure was constructed by the random copolymerization. Furthermore, in XRS measurement, the copolymers exhibited the first order scattering peak at sub-10 nanometer scale with several highly ordered peaks in regular intervals. We presume that LC phase structure of the copolymers was longer-range ordered lamellar structure than that of each homopolymer.
