Abstract

A 68-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with a hard 12 × 12cm mass of the right breast. The upper skin at the surface of the mass was necrotized and an ulcer had formed. Stromal sarcoma of the breast was diagnosed from a core needle biopsy. Right mastectomy proceeded and analysis of a sentinel lymph node biopsy found no metastasis. The final histopathological diagnosis of the tumor was also stromal sarcoma. Three months after the primary surgery, a distant metastasis identified in the right middle lobe of the lung gradually increased, but new lesions were not found. The lung metastasis was treated by partial pneumonectomy. Thereafter, multiple brain metastases were discovered and treated with whole brain radiation therapy. The patient died 12 months after the primary surgery due to herniation secondary to brain metastasis.
