Description
The authors are developing REX, a Web application which facilitates learning of reading English. REX personalizes the individual readability equations of learners based on their study logs and predicts the level of difficulty of the texts provided. For a parameter of such equations, the ratio of difficult words (in the sense that they do not appear in the specified vocabulary list) is often used, as in some of the well-known readability formulas. On the other hand, the use of a static vocabulary list is inadequate because each learner has his/her different vocabulary. To enhance personalization, the authors incorporated a new function into REX. This function lets learners click their unknown words while they are reading texts. After the reading, REX updates their unknown wordlists based on the history data. The unknown wordlists provide a good approximation of their vocabularies as they proceed. In this study, we examine the practicality of the ratios of difficult words, which we compute from learners'unknown wordlists in experiments.
