Description

Toshio Matsumoto advocated a theory of avant-garde documentary, and when he was working at the Shinriken Motion Picture, he directed several films, including Bicycle in Dream (1956, substantial director); Caisson (1957, director); Growing Power (1958, director); and Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Part II JRR-2 (1960, director until the end of 1958).

Until now, the films other than Bicycle in Dream were missing. Through this work of research, however, Caisson and Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Part II were confirmed to exist, and Growing Power was confirmed to exist as a revised version by a different director. This paper mainly analyzes newly-discovered films. First, the paper clarifies that the political dispute in the Educational Filmmakers Association and the labor dispute at the Shinriken Motion Picture were connected in Matsumoto’s thinking. Next, the paper individually analyzes the newly-discovered films and clarifies the existence of a precursor to the avant-garde documentary. Finally, the paper analyzes Bicycle in Dream, the result of collaboration with the Experimental Workshop, particularly the parts that Matsumoto directed, indicating a relationship between Bicycle in Dream and newly-discovered films. This way, the paper clarifies the developmental process of a theory of avant-garde documentary.
