Description
Soft-decision forward error correction and constellation shaping have widely been investigated since the deployment of coherent detection in backbone optical fiber communication networks. In addition to such advanced channel coding, source coding, i.e., data compression, would be also useful for efficient communications. However, there have been few reports of source coding in this field. In this work, we show a modified version of probabilistic shaping (PS) of constellation to have an effect of quasi data compression by a novel coding method. This technique, compressed PS, will achieve higher quality communications or lower power consumption compared with conventional PS.
