Abstract

Next-generation mobile networks are expected to not only realize high capacity based on multi-user multiple-input and multiple-output (MU-MIMO), but also meet various requirements, including fairness, via the efficient cooperation between MU-MIMO and user scheduling. In this paper, we propose a method to achieve both high system capacity and fairness among users flexibly and efficiently based on MU-MIMO Tomlinson Harashima precoding (THP), which can realize higher system capacity than linear precoding (LP). In the proposed approach, the entire bandwidth is divided into two parts, where semi-orthogonal user selection (SUS) is first adopted for throughput maximization and proportional fairness (PF) is then applied to the remaining users. Moreover, the proposed method adopts LP instead of THP during the operation of PF to reduce the required computational effort. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated in comparison with the sole adoption of THP in terms of system capacity, fairness, and calculation cost.
