In order to select the best possible treatment for pediatric acute otitis media, we should monitor the detection frequency of drug-resistant bacteria. This report details the bacteriological findings of pediatric patients (under six years of age) with acute otitis media between January 2010 and December 2014.

For each year, the detection rate of Streptococcus pneumonia and Haemophilus influenzae was approximately 32% and 42%, respectively. Notably, while the detection frequency of drug-resistant S. pneumonia was 66.3% in 2010, it decreased to 35.4% in 2012. Similarly, the detection frequency of drug-resistant H. influenzae decreased from 53.8% in 2012 to 28.3% in 2013. However, the detection frequency of beta-lactamase positive Moraxella catarrhalis was not decreased. It is necessary to continue monitoring the detection frequency of drug resistant bacteria to adequately and appropriately treat patients with pediatric acute otitis media.
