Description
Laser displays and laser illuminations have been attracting a lot of interest owing to their excellent characteristics; wide color gamut, high color fi delity, and low-electrical-power consumption compared to conventional systems. These interesting advantages of laser displays/illuminations essentially come from a laser’s unique feature as a light source: high coherence in both temporal and spatial domains. However, this high coherence may cause unwanted interference patterns on images or illumination planes, called “speckle noise.” Reduction of speckle noise is a key issue in the further development and utilization of laser displays and illuminations. In this report, several techniques for speckle reduction are presented. Experimental results on precise speckle measurements utilizing the state-of-the-art speckle measurement system with a cooled CCD camera and auto-power-level adjustments are also discussed.
