Abstract

Current seismic design standards of soil embankments mainly considers circular slip caused by shear failure. However, many open cracks caused by tensile failures has been observed in soil embankments during the past earthquakes. Soil embankments need to be designed considering not only shear failure but also tensile failure. In this study, we performed numerical simulation of soil embankments underlying liquefiable soil ground. eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) incorporating the elasto-plastic model considering both shear and tensile failures is adopted in the numerical simulations. Two types of embankments with different heights are vibrated by two types of input motions with different frequencies. Tensile cracks occur from either surface or bottom of the embankment. The tensile crack formation might be explained based on; dynamic displacement occurring inside the embankment causes the tensile crack, and permanent displacement accompanying the lateral flow causes the tensile crack, respectively.
