Description

Since the advent of a new science examining humans and water, "socio-hydrology," studies of dynamics and co-evolution of human–water systems have been advancing rapidly. As described herein, we present a framework for socio-hydrology and global trends of socio-hydrological studies. Moreover, we discuss the potential for and challenges for evolution of socio-hydrology in Japan. Socio-hydrology is an empirical study that seeks regularity or recurrence in the interactive dynamics involving humans and water systems. The framework for implementing socio-hydrological studies consists of three subdisciplines: historical socio-hydrology, comparative socio-hydrology, and process socio-hydrology. We present the potential and challenges for evolving socio-hydrological studies in Japan as (1) implementation of paradigm shift studies and (2) utilization of Japanese research heritages related human–water systems and development of interdisciplinary communities in Japan.
