Abstract

<p>The thermal characteristics of a machining center change frequently because of the exchange machining conditions, such as the spindle rotation speed. Therefore, the heat generation characteristics of the spindle and the optimum cooling conditions should be well understood to achieve high-precision machining. In particular, the heat generation of the built-in motor spindle directly affects the thermal characteristics of the spindle. In this study, the thermal properties of a built-in motor spindle were analyzed based on simulation results. In addition, during the process of water cooling, the effects of the thermal characteristics on the spindle rotation speed and cooling conditions, such as the water temperature and flow rate, were experimentally investigated. Finally, the experimental and simulation results were compared.</p>
